Artist Statement

My artwork is a meditation on the beauty and impermanence of life, exploring the delicate harmony between the natural world and our urban existence. Having lived extensively in South Florida, the Dominican Republic, and England, my work offers a contemporary visual narrative that honors the distinct and recognizable landscapes of each place. Through these environments, I seek to create paintings that function as both cultural testimony and emotional resonance, inviting viewers into an intimate dialogue with time, memory, and preservation.

My practice is deeply rooted in pure observation through the en plein air tradition, working primarily in oil paint while fully immersed in the living environments of these regions. By intentionally minimizing studio artifice, I focus on the authentic interplay of atmosphere, light, and form as they unfold naturally before me. This approach allows each painting to capture an unrepeatable moment—an atmospheric memory suspended in time.

My technical and conceptual influences include Johannes Vermeer’s mastery of capturing a moment in time, Joaquín Sorolla’s extraordinary command of color and luminosity, John Constable’s reverence for natural truth, and Meindert Hobbema’s compositional clarity. Equally essential to my process is the careful selection of archival materials, often painting on linen mounted on board, ensuring that each work maintains structural integrity and visual vibrancy for generations.

Throughout my collections, recurring natural elements emerge as poetic symbols of life’s cyclical progression—birth, existence, and transformation. The hibiscus flower frequently appears in varying stages of bloom, from tightly formed buds to radiant blossoms and gently fading petals. This botanical evolution mirrors the human experience, serving as a quiet yet profound meditation on transience and renewal.

The Florida coastal landscapes I portray often include the presence of sea turtles during their nesting season, symbolizing endurance, continuity, and the possibility of coexistence between thriving natural ecosystems and expanding metropolitan environments. Similarly, my recent exploration of a solitary pine tree along the shoreline reflects themes of resilience, elegance, and silent guardianship. Standing against the forces of wind, salt, and time, the tree becomes a living monument to perseverance while nurturing the surrounding ecosystem.

My paintings of the Dominican Republic capture the region’s raw, unfiltered beauty, preserving its authentic spirit while acknowledging the inevitable transformation brought by modernization and tourism.

My English landscapes examine a cultural devotion to heritage preservation, where land, architecture, and tradition are safeguarded with remarkable care. Through these works, I seek to translate that ethos of stewardship into broader global conversations, particularly within Latin American environments where cultural and ecological traditions face increasing vulnerability.

By weaving these symbolic and geographic narratives together, my work celebrates the profound beauty that compels artistic creation while quietly advocating for environmental and cultural preservation. Subtle visual elements—such as a fragile yellow leaf or the quiet presence of a weathered branch—serve as reminders of nature’s vulnerability and the responsibility we share in its protection.

Ultimately, my paintings are invitations: to pause, to observe, and to reconnect with the fleeting yet magnificent rhythms of life. Through them, I hope to inspire viewers to live with greater awareness, to cherish the present moment, and to honor the interconnected world that sustains us all.
