Artist Statement

My artwork is a meditation on the beauty and impermanence of life, advocating for a vital harmony between the natural world and our urban existence. Having lived in South Florida, the Dominican Republic and England for most of my life, I seek to offer the audience a contemporary visual narrative that celebrates each place unique identifiable landscape.

Pure Observation: The Plein Air Technique
My practice is rooted in a pure observation en plein air technique, using oil paints, where I am fully immersed in the natural surroundings of Florida, the Dominican Republic, and England. Eschewing studio artifice, I focus on the honest interplay of light and form to capture the authentic presence of a place. This method allows me to render a "moment in time" that resonates with the viewer’s soul, influenced by the mastery of Johannes Vermeer for capturing a moment in time, Joaquin Sorolla for his mastery of color, and John Constable for his natural renderings, Meindert Hobbema for compositions. The process also includes a carefully selection of the support & best paintings materials, usually linen over board, with the intention of creating a high-quality surface that can support, protect the paint layers above for the life of the artwork.

Interposing Beauty and Urgency: The Stages of Life
In most collection, I interpose two powerful symbols to portray the cyclical stages of life—birth, existence, and death—and the urgency of environmental stewardship:

  • The Hibiscus: Within a single canvas, I depict the hibiscus flower in various phases—from tight buds (birth) to radiant blooms (existence) and wilting petals (death). This botanical narrative serves as a profound metaphor for the human experience.

  • The Sea Turtle: Parallel to the hibiscus, the annual sea turtle nesting season represents the enduring circles of life. Their presence along our coast is a testament to the successful coexistence of nature and the bustling city.

  • The Last standing Pine Tree by the Beach - my latest muse: This tree has a great presence. To me it represents, elegance, strength, perseverance and constant transformation, as it also helps to sustains the flora and fauna around it.

  • The English Landscape & Heritage: These works explore the profound dedication to heritage preservation found in England. I seek to translate this level of care to Latin America, using my paintings to advocate for the protection of our disappearing ways of life.

  • The Dominican Republic: My paintings of Dominican Republic capture the raw, untouched beauty of the region. They serve as a visual incentive for conservation, documenting the landscape’s authentic presence before the inevitable expansion of tourism and development.

By interposing these themes, I balance the inherent beauty of the places that moves me to create art, and insert in my pieces my grain of sand pertaining to the artistic narrative that the global artworld must Carrie for the safety of our planet critical need for preservation. “Preserve Our Global Eco-System”.  Symbols such as an activated dead branch or a single yellow leaf underscore the natural cycle's fragility and the urgency of protecting our ecosystems. My goal is to create imagery that invites the viewer to live fully, love deeply, and honor our shared world.
